This post is a part of the Early Stage Climate Startup series from Climafix 2024

Highlights

  • Scion uses atmospheric CO2, salt water, and barren land to cultivate algae for producing vegan protein, nutraceuticals, and accumulating carbon credits.
  • Its cultivation system is powered entirely by solar energy, making it a carbon-negative solution.

1. Value Proposition

  • High-Yield, Sustainable Algae Cultivation: Scion Algae has developed an advanced algae mass cultivation system that operates with minimal water usage, artificial lighting, hydrodynamics, and machine learning.
  • Multiple Revenue Streams: The system allows Scion Algae to extract high-value nutraceuticals, such as Omega-3 EPA oil, beta-carotene, and xanthin, as well as proteins and other bio-refined products.

2. Pain Points

  • Global Warming & GHG Emissions: Traditional agriculture contributes 15% of global GHG emissions. Scion Algae’s system absorbs atmospheric CO2 during cultivation.
  • Resource Depletion: With the depletion of fresh water and fertile land, traditional farming methods are increasingly unsustainable. Scion Algae’s process requires only salt water, sunlight, and barren lands.

3. Climate Impact

  • Scion Algae’s system is carbon-negative, absorbing more CO2 than it produces. For every kilogram of algae biomass generated, 1.8 times that amount of CO2 is captured.
  • The algae cultivation system runs on solar energy, ensuring that it remains fully sustainable.

4. Current & Future Target Segments

  • Current Targets Segments: Omega-3 EPA oil, vegan protein from the Nannochloropsis species of algae. Other segments are nutraceuticals, vegan protein, and carbon credits.
  • Future Potential: Expanding into wastewater treatment, bio-refining (for pigments), amino acids, & enzymes.

5. USPs

  • Scion Algae’s patent-pending algae cultivation system integrates artificial lighting, hydrodynamics, and machine learning to create an efficient and scalable process.
  • The entire production system is powered by solar energy and captures atmospheric CO2, making it carbon-negative.

6. Team Profile

  • Sai Krishna (Founder & Algal Cultivation Expert): With expertise in algae cultivation and technology. Sai Krishna’s deep knowledge of algal biology and mass cultivation techniques enables the company to optimize algae growth for both sustainability and scalability.
  • Dr. Armugam (AI & ML Expert): Dr. Armugam holds dual doctorates in Computers and Management, with a strong specialization in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). His expertise is crucial in advanced AI algorithms to monitor, control, and scale the algae cultivation process.
  • Dr. Siva Subramaniam (Phycoremediation Expert): Dr. Siva Subramaniam is a pioneer in phycoremediation, the use of algae to treat wastewater. He provides key expertise in applying Scion Algae’s technology to environmental applications, such as cleaning industrial wastewater while generating valuable algal biomass.
