This post is a part of the Early Stage Climate Startup series from Climafix 2024

Highlights

  • Electrochemical Recirculating Aquaculture System (EC-RAS) that replaces traditional biofilter-based RAS methods.
  • It offers zero discharge, eliminates harmful nitrogen oxides (N₂O), and provides automated, real-time monitoring through IoT.

1. Value Proposition

  • ECKLIEN4RAS replaces traditional biofilter-based systems with an electrochemical filtration process that removes solids, ammonia, and harmful organisms while preventing nitrate accumulation and N₂O production. This results in a zero-discharge system that boosts productivity up to 15x, while also offering significant carbon offsets.

2. Pain Points

  • Disease Management and Inefficiencies in Bio-Based Filters: ECKLIEN4RAS uses an advanced electrochemical process to actively remove pathogens, including common viruses and bacteria, creating a biosecure environment—all achieved through a single-pass solution.
  • Environmental Concerns: N₂O is a potent greenhouse gas with 298 times the global warming potential of CO₂. ECKLIEN4RAS eliminates the step that produces N₂O, offering a climate-friendly alternative.

3. Climate Impact

  • By eliminating the denitrification process in RAS, ECKLIEN4RAS prevents the release of nitrous oxide (N₂O), reducing the overall greenhouse gas emissions associated with aquaculture. The zero-discharge technology prevents water contamination and reduces the need for water replacement, making the system highly water-efficient.

4. Current & Future Target Segments

  • Current Target Segments: The Indian market, including shrimp, fish, and crab farmers, as well as hatcheries, aquatic breeding centers, and inland saline water farming sectors.
  • Future Target Segments: ECKLIEN4RAS plans to expand globally, with a focus on shrimp and fish RAS systems.

5. USP

  • Zero nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions and cost-effective, high-yield aquaculture technology.

6. Team Profile

  • Prof. Baskaran Manimaran (Founder & CEO): Prof. Manimaran brings over 40 years of experience in aquaculture and fisheries management, including roles as the Founder and Vice Chancellor of State Fisheries University and Technical Director at the Coastal Aquaculture Authority. His deep expertise in the aquaculture industry and his extensive network with shrimp farmers and industry leaders provide strong leadership and industry insight.
  • Jay Kiran (Co-Founder): With a background in business management and engineering, along with his experience as CEO of Tektanink and Unison Holdings, where he specialized in electrochemical technology incubation and wastewater treatment.
