This post is a part of the Early Stage Climate Startup series from Climafix 2024

Highlights

  • Patented Damless® hydrokinetic turbines that harness energy from canal water flows.
  • Utilizing existing canal network.
  • Addressing the intermittency of solar and wind power.

1. Value Proposition

  • Being Damless: These turbines harness energy from canal water flows without requiring large infrastructure such as dams. They are highly adaptable and compatible with low-flow speeds, making them ideal for India’s extensive 175,000 km canal network, where 60% of these waterways are suitable for power generation.

2. Pain Points

  • Continuous energy source: Unlike solar and wind power, which is intermittent, Maini’s turbines produce energy as long as water flows through the canals.
  • Installation and maintenance: The turbines are easy to install and maintain without complex infrastructure.

3. Climate Impact

  • Canal-based energy offers an additional avenue to enhance renewable power production and a greener grid.
  • Maini’s turbines generate power without altering natural water flows, preserving aquatic ecosystems.

4. Current & Future Target Segments

  • Current Target Segments: Water resource departments (WRDs), large industrial, and governmental organizations, and renewable energy investors. Initial trials are already ongoing with WRDs in Maharashtra.
  • Future Target Segments: Expanding to other countries with similar canal networks.

5. USP

  • Unique Design: The patented Damless® technology of the rotor blades allows for increased efficiency in energy capture, even in low-flow environments.

6. Team Profiles

  • Swati Maini (Founder): She has a diverse background in turbine design, industrial water treatment, and nuclear fuel systems. With experience in the NASA Design-Build-Fly Program and expertise in commissioning nuclear fuel canisters.
